BitWarden is a password manager. It takes all your passwords and stores them securely. We host VaultWarden, an open source, audited, and well-respected clone of BitWarden. Is it perfectly secure? No such thing. Risks are always there, but the software is actively developed and trusted by nerds and tin foil hat types everywhere.
Why a service? Cause you have to have a place to store your data so you can sync your many devices to a central repository. And cause if you lose your device(s), you can still get into your passwords.
Cost? Free! Just sign up here. No spam.
BitWarden offers clients for Windows and Mac. You'll also need a browser extension to do auto filling of passwords when you visit a website. See here for that.
How safe are our servers? Pretty safe - all industry standard precautions are in place. Even if it wasn't, your data is encrypted by BitWarden and we can't see it or decrypt it. If you lose your master password, you're out of luck, and we can't help you. BUT, you will at least know WHO is hosting your data and WHERE: Us and in USA.
Need help? Give us a buzz, happy to help you import your passwords from the crap tool you are currently using to BitWarden.
Surely, nothing is free...we gotta make money, right? Well, sure, but it ain't via this. If you like this freebie, give the other stuff a try.
You can use a full Bitwarden client if you want on your computer (in addition to the website, the browser extensions, and the mobile app). The browser extensions and mobile apps help you auto fill stuff in. Make sure to adjust your client settings to use a custom BitWarden server to be: https://pw.thedoodleproject.com.
And same to be true on your mobile app.
If you have questions - just ask.
When you install the Browser Extension, the first thing it will do is open a new tab to the bitwarden.com website and offer to set you up. Close this tab - you aren't gonna sign up there!
Go to https://pw.thedoodleproject.com and sign in. Once you are set up, verify your email address to unlock all the features (spam checker on my part).
Next, in the extension, instead of clicking Log In, click Settings:
Next, type in our server address and click save. Then Log In with the info you set up on our site.
The Self Hosted Server address is https://pw.thedoodleproject.com
